End the Summer Season 2010

With the summer months gone and the lodge fallen quiet everyone here has already begun preparing for next year. As I anticipate next spring and the thousands of salmon that will swim up this river I can’t help reflect on the great fishing and fun times spent with fellow anglers this season.
The steady pour of salmon past the lodge was truly amazing. By the beginning of June the river was teeming with grayling and chums fresh from the ocean. We had just begun to wipe the dust off our heavier salmon gear when the Kings arrived in big numbers. We saw a steady procession of large kings through the end of August. The most under appreciated fish this summer was definitely the sockeyes that filled the small tributaries for what seemed all summer. Their numbers were so great that no trip was complete without the standard photo of a bright sockeye somewhere in the mix.
Just when we were starting to see the last of the chums making their way up river, the silvers leapt on the scene and easy limits and a full fillet table was the norm for the rest of the season. Record numbers of Coho salmon filled several locations within shouting distance of the lodge and made for fishing that can only be described faithfully by those that experienced it.
Rainbow trout fat and feisty after a three month diet of salmon eggs were voracious and made for hours of fun and great sport on light tackle.
I would like to thank all those anglers that I had the privilege to fish with this year and encourage anyone who would like to experience salmon fishing on one of the best salmon rivers in the world to call Chet or Halie in the office at 907-240-4868. Make your plans to come fish in the remote Alaskan wilderness experience that is Kautumn Lodge.
