Fishing Report for July 20, 2010

This morning it rained and we opted to stay inside and cook a huge breakfast.  Later this afternoon the rain stopped and I headed down river to what we call the Chester hole.  It is a small hole that is too tight to get a boat in so I parked down stream and walked the hundred meters up.  As I was approaching, fish were rolling right next to the bank.  I approached quietly and was amazed to see hundreds of Sockeye stacked up with a few Chums mixed in.  Armed with my new fly rod and a blue fly my second cast produced a 10 pound Sockeye.  These fish were mostly bright silver with a few of the mature red ones mixed in.  For three hours I hooked and released Sockeyes and the occasional feisty Chum, only keeping three fish that were bleeding.  They will be our dinner tomorrow with asparagus and Jasmine rice.  It was a fantastic day on a river just teeming with fish.  Days like this you can only find in Alaska.  Stay tuned for more reports to come.
